"Wouldn't it be nice if we could all just get along!"

Family dynamics are the patterns of relating, or interactions, between family members. Each family system and its dynamics are unique, although there are some common patterns.

Kate works with systems theory which is a strength based practice that focuses on the strengths of individuals and family to facilitate positive change.

To do this patterns of interactions are assessed, with an emphasis on what is happening, rather than why it is happening.

Family counselling:

  • is NOT about blaming each other

  • is NOT focusing on one person's side of the story

  • IS about exploring unhelpful patterns of communication

  • IS about exploring influences on the family dynamics

Some influences on the family dynamics

  • separating of the parents

  • parents establishing new relationships

  • having a particularly soft or strict parent

  • personalities of family members

  • an absent parent

  • events affecting family members: an affair, divorce, trauma, death, unemployment

  • influence from extended family or others

  • family violence, abuse, alcohol or drug use, mental health difficulties
